This is the second set of books I have read written by J. R. Rain. The detective work is straightforward and well done. There is not may twists to the story line. There is no roller coaster ride. On the other hand you also do not know the special 'who don'it' till the end either. The problem I have is with his main characters. He gets this one main idea about them and then you hear about it constantly. Even the fact of being in a car with no air conditioning. I have one more book written by this author and I am not even sure I want to read it for fear of getting hit over the head about another character. I guess What I think is needed is more depth to the stories and not just a lot of surface.
Because of these reasons I could only give it three stars.

Knighthorse JR Rain 9780557348152 Books Reviews
Not exactly a cozy mystery, but not exactly a deep noir either... somewhere in between with a dose of humor and a pinch of edginess that works to deliver a good read. Stories are novel, solutions also work, and, no, I couldn't solve the mystery on my own. I'd suggest perhaps an editor's touch to make the read a bit more satisfying, but that's just me.
I just finished the first two books featuring football-sensation-turned-detective Jim Knighthorse and I am eager to start the third book today! My expectations for novels are usually fairly low, and these stories completely took me by surprise.
The author has created a very credible main character, flawed and very human, but always striving to do the right thing by his clients and his loved ones. Jim's conversations with God are fascinating, and one of my favorite parts of the story. The plot lines are clear and easy to follow, the dialogue flows smoothly and the people and situations Jim encounters are completely believable.
I highly recommend this book and sincerely hope that more Jim Knighthorse books follow quickly!
I don't give out reviews often as I have read over 3,000 books, but in this case I had to.
I had seen several books by J.R Rain that sounded interesting so I started off with his
Samantha Moon Series (beings that I am a lover of Vampire Novels)and just loved his writing style,
he has a way of sucking you into his books and making you fall in love with all the
characters not just the main character. I went on to reading his KnightHorse Series
and again was completely sucked into the books. I can't wait to read more from
him, its obvious he was a great P.I in his days and he goes onto carrying it into his books.
I hope he keeps up the great P.I and Detective stories hes made a huge fan out of me! I rate him
right along with Laurel K. Hamilton and Janet Evanovich to both whom I adore their stories.
Jim Knighthorse is a football fullback turned private detective with plenty of personal problems. He also has a swelled head, making him very annoying at times, just as the author intended.
The books are told in Jim's voice, which changes its level of sophistication with his mood. In each of the novels in this duo, Jim has multiple issues on his plate; hunting murderers, and dealing with other problems - a child abuser - girlfriend being stalked - friend's kid beaten by mob of bullies - and in each fast-moving book he prevails, EXCEPT on one concern finding the person who murdered his mother.
This latter is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. No closure.
Nonetheless, the books are good. All characters are plastic and move naturally. BTW, I loved Jack/God, the homeless man in volume 1 and would have liked to see more of him.
Despite painful grammar and punctuation errors, I really loved these stories. J. R. Rain usually writes more horror/fantasy stories - witches, vampires, etc. But the Jim Knighthorse novels have the mix of mystery, quirkiness, humor and believability I look for in my fiction reading material. I think there are only three, and I would truly love to read more. (BTW, J. R. Rain did seem to get a better editor or proofreader by the 3rd one... thank goodness.) So how about it, J. R.? Give up the fantasy/science fiction/horror genres for awhile and give us some more Jim Knighthorse books. Oh, and don't forget God at the McDonald's.
I found book 1 free, and before I could read it, I found this and shortly after book 3. I read them all, one after the other in order. They were all free (December was a good month for free books I thought I would like.) Each of these books were OK and maybe a little better. I did notice some editing/grammar/formatting problems but those did not bother me like they do some readers. I found some inconsistencies (like how old is the girlfriend -- 3 years older as in book 1 or same age as in book 2 and 3), but I can overlook these. What rated this lower was the Jack character (a homeless street bum that was God) He was neither believable nor necessary and his theology was really messed up -- I hoped he had disappeared since he did not appear in book 2, but he was back in book 3 and was still ruining the story line. He made the main character unbelievable to the point of mentally unstable and did not advance or enhance the story. There was great potential in the main character and the supporting cast but Jack spoiled it all.
This book, which contains the first two novels in the Knighthorse series, was a murder mystery but the mystery part was only a small portion of the book. The author has a style that is engaging and showcases the characters in a real light as real people with real problems, insecurities, hopes, dreams and disappointments. The insertion of Jack (God) adds a reminder that sometimes things aren't as black and white as society would like you to think in a manner that isn't preachy or overly spiritual. This is not a Christian suspense novel. The language can be strong and parts can be graphic. Entertaining easy reading, humorous at times. Very flawed main character but one that seems to still be very likeable...or not, depending on your point of view.
This is the second set of books I have read written by J. R. Rain. The detective work is straightforward and well done. There is not may twists to the story line. There is no roller coaster ride. On the other hand you also do not know the special 'who don'it' till the end either.
