On Campaign the Civil War Art of Keith Rocco D SCOTT Peter Cozzens 9781853476013 Books
Until I came across Keith Rocco's wonderful ON CAMPAIGN art book, my knowledge of Civil War artists was limited to Mort Kunstler and Don Troiani. And now I have Keith Rocco to add to the mix. Certainly this collection of over 50 color artwork bespeaks a great talent. Civil War buffs will want to track down a copy of this Emperor's Press book and add it to their collection.Since my personal preference has been for realistic artwork, I've been a bigger fan of Troiani than Kunstler. In some ways, Rocco's style is the flip side of the coin. While his images can be strikingly sharp and vivid, his artwork can be much more impressionistic with, for instance, few details on faces. His battle scenes have a visceral power and impact almost the equal of Troiani's.
I very much enjoyed Rocco's book. ON CAMPAIGN is a marvelous introduction to a talented artist. Highly recommended.

On Campaign the Civil War Art of Keith Rocco D SCOTT Peter Cozzens 9781853476013 Books Reviews
Great book! A must have for any Civil War enthusiast. Keith Rocco is by far among my favorite contemporary Civil War artist. His style is unique as he is very competent~~~~
With this book, we see artist Keith Rocco's exceptional understanding of Civil War life - on and off the battlefield, and a certain mastery of this subject in his paintings. In a style that seems to be a cross between such artists as Remington and Hopper, Rocco creates striking scenes that practically draw you into the combat... the combatants seeming to be in motion... sweeping right across the canvas.
Although there are other renowned artists in the field of Civil War/military art who may pay a bit more attention to the finite details and historical accuracies of their subjects (particularly Don Troiani), I find Rocco's work right up there with the best of his contemporaries. Passionate portrayal, and the ability to draw the viewer into a painting are as important as rendering the historically correct belt buckle or hat.
Unfortunately, this book is out of print. But do your best to find a copy - the search will be well worth it!
