Shadow Roll A Sam Russo Mystery Ki Longfellow 9781937819002 Books
In Ki Longfellow's most recent achievement, a set of noir detective novels following the cases of one Sam Russo, I find myself missing her lyrical, Chandler-like descriptions that so easily bring the gritty, hard-boiled world into focus. But unlike Longfellow's previous 20th Century period works, masterpieces in the third person, Sam tells his own story. And Sam, well, he's not a lyrical guy. Hard, clear-headed, a self-proclaimed pain in the ass, Sam is a gumshoe, a PI, walking in the shadow of his two heroes, Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade. What Sam Russo lacks in landscapes, he makes up for in people. Sam can figure a man (or woman) just by looking at them. And he gets better at it when they start talking. Longfellow's genius in Sam's story is not the Chandler-esque lyrical description seen in China Blues and Chasing Women, but the impeccable majesty of dialog that runs through all her works. As soon as Sam starts asking questions, the story jumps forward like a horse out of the gate. Try to put the book down now, and you can't. All you can do - all I could do - is grip the reigns, tuck your head in, and hold on `til the end.

Seemed to get positive reviews on GoodReads, but I found this to be quite dull and less than mediocre of a hard boiled detective novel.
Great characters and a fun period romp. This has a ton to recommend it as a old-school noir style detective novel. It was also clearly written by an animal lover, as well as a lover of the gumshoe and the whodunit.
Everyone will love Jane, the yodeling Basenji dog.
