I LOVED the idea for this book. I loved the beginning. I didn't mind that it was a little slow, or that I saw the big twist coming from about page 3--the main character is supposed to be naive, so it was okay for her to take longer to figure it out. But the more I read, the more this book infuriated me.The plot and character arc are a hot mess. Character motivations are unclear at best, self-contradictory at worst. Dialogue feels wooden and unrealistically formal, and all the characters sound alike. I liked Kym, the main character, most of the time (though her feelings yo-yoed from one page to the next), but the rest of the characters were either bland or unlikeable. Not to mention there were way too many characters, period. This story could have been told in 200-300 pages instead of 420, and it would have felt much tighter and more cohesive.
I started to lose interest about 25% in. By 75%, I was angry with how terribly the author had managed to mangle such a brilliant concept. I forced myself to keep going, sure that a satisfying ending would somewhat redeem the book for me. NOPE. The ending was the worst part, and dropped my review from 2 stars to 1. It was not only unsatisfying, it was totally contrived and unbelievable. [spoilers ahead, obv] The dragon fails to defeat the wizard with his MASSIVE DRAGON POWERS, then the wizard ABSORBS THOSE POWERS, then little old Kym is able to defeat him BY HERSELF. WHAAAA? But [spoilers again, though really I'm doing you a favor by saving you 400 pages of mind-numbing tedium] Kym dies, and her romantic subplot goes completely unresolved, and everything is DEPRESSING.
Trust me. Don't waste your time.

What a really fabulous new spin on Frankenstein. I was totally entertained by the characters and their relationship with each other.. I was also very impressed by the editing for taking this genre since usually it is non-existant. I would definitely read more by this author
Love this book. I bought it for my 6th grader and I started reading it before her. A guy builds his daughter, that was killed by a wizard, into a special creature that helps save the other girls of the town from the evil wizard. She loves the way the book looks with the paper edges looking worn and distressed. Great read for kids that love fantasy.
75% of this book is wonderful and well-paced. It's a little predictable if you're looking for it, but that can be overlooked because Kym is a great character. Unfortunately, the last 25% has terrible pacing, an unnecessary character death, and an unsatisfying ending that left me going "What the actual hemlock?" So... I'm severely disappointed. I would rate it lower, but I did enjoy three fourths of the book.
I always have a hard time putting into words how I feel about a really good book! This one wasn't perfectly written, but the story is so fascinating and the characters either super lovable or loathed. I read some reviews that were so dramatic about how sad and heartbreaking this book is, and I agree with that so an extent, but I wouldn't say that I felt depressed after reading it! I couldn't wait to read it each night and couldn't wait to see what would happen to all of these characters.I would really recommend it.
The first half of the book took way too long to get to the point. The second half of the book is when all the great action happened. That would warrant this book with 4 stars but I could barely get through the first part because it was so repetitive so, his the 3 stars. I also do not feel compelled to read the other book that goes with this. I'm glad that it's over
Wonderful fairy tale for modern YA readers. Be warned this is not all happiness and light but it's an engaging first novel (with delightful chapter illustrations) that stands out from the Harry Potter wannabes. I'd call this an homage to the classic Grimm stories with all that entails. Highly recommended both for the intended audience and older readers who can appreciate a fresh voice in the YA writer crowd. I can only hope Ms Connolly has more stories to tell.
I thought this was the sweetest book. Well, the evil stuff isn't sweet, but I loved Kym's character, she is a precious girl/thing. I love the cover of the book, I can picture Kym looking just like her picture on the front. I love the boy she meets named Ren, he's a good guy too. I think anyone that likes the books this one is compared to when you read the blurb will like this one as well. I think kids will like this too.
